From Maradona to the paranormal and dreamscapes to taxidermy, the graphic image of Sonar has become, year after year, one of the most anticipated and controversial aspects of the festival.
Far from the clichés traditionally used to introduce electronic culture, Sonar's image seeks surprise, singularity and a distinct sense of humour, not devoid of controversy, that has become the brand and icon of the festival.
In contrast to the coldness associated with electronic music at that time, Sonar highlighted the sensuality and heat of Brazil. To do so, it used a spectacular group of carnival dancers, outside their normal context, photographed in snowy settings taken straight from Catalan Christmas iconography. The surrealism starts here.
